Two documentaries celebrating Women’s day
Kamlabai, by Reena Mohan (47’)
Kamlabai Gokhale was one of the first actors of India, and the first lady of Indian film. When this documentary was shot, she was ninety-two years old. In gentle, playful, irreverent conversations with the filmmaker, Kamlabai discusses her present and past. Far from a nostalgic celebration, the film weaves an impression of history and change – particularly the history of Indian film and theatre as it was experienced by a woman who struggled against the social structures of her times.
Memories Of Fear, by Madhusree Dutta (57’)
Four parallel narratives trace the path of growing up of girl children of various age groups. and explores the interplay between sexuality, the construction of fear and women’s own contribution to the system that continues to denigrate them.
