Come and share your passion and emotions with other cinema enthusiasts at the new « Rendez-vous with French cinema » being organized jointly by Alliance Française de Bombay and the NCPA every second Wednesday of the month. To begin with, we will pay tribute to the genius of Jacques Tati who, within a space of 6 movies, made a unique contribution to the history of comic cinema. From François, the postman in Jour de Fete, an absurd character who is stuck between two different ideals of society and the tribulations of M. Hulot from Les Vacances de M. Hulot, to Parade, Jacques Tati has tried his best to observe and portray, with meticulous handling of sound and visual detail, the excesses of society and its obsession with all things ‘modern’, the world of consumerism, cars and holidays at the seaside.

Unclassifiable, this director, who is indisputably one of the greatest creative personages of his time, has left behind a body of work that is very contemporary and exceedingly irreverent.

Soigne ton gauche  (1936) – 12mn

Minor but immensely funny; these short films showcase Tati’s ability to turn the lowest comedy into a graceful work of art.

Keep your left up is directed by Rene Clement and stars the young Tati as a wannabe boxer whose incompetence inside the ring drives his opponents crazy. Minor but immensely funny, these shorts showcase Tati’s ability to turn the lowest comedy into a graceful work of art.

Jour de Fête (1949) 86mn

Tati’s first major feature, Jour de fête (The Big Day), tells the story of an inept rural village postman who interrupts his duties to inspect the traveling fair that has come to town. Influenced by too much wine and a documentary on the rapidity of the American postal service, he goes to hilarious lengths to speed his mail deliveries aboard his bicycle.
