The film takes place in Haiti in the 1960’s, during the tyrannical regime of Francois Duvalier, the dictator whose titles included President for Life and the falsely fatherly Papa Doc.  The film follows Sarah, one of three children left with her grandmother when their father, a military officer too weak to control the brutality of Duvalier’s henchmen, the Tontons Macoutes, flees with his wife.
