Cycle de Saint-Matthieu by Le Caravage (around 1600)
La flagellation by Piero Della Francesca (around 1610)
Les jardins du paradis – a series of Persian Miniatures (around 1620-24)
The three adjacent Caravaggio canvases which comprise the Cycle de Saint-Matthieu represent a decisive shift towards a more naturalistic and subject-oriented art. La flagellation is renowned for its unusual and complex composition. Its iconography has been the subject of widely differing theories. Les jardins du paradis gives us an insight into the extraordinary vitality of Persian miniatures.
