MASTER CLASS ON THE GREAT MUMBAI FIRE OF 1803
BY DR. SUKRITI ISSAR
In 1803, a fire broke out in the fort area of Mumbai, called at the time a ‘great calamity’. Houses and warehouses burnt down. Business was disrupted. People panicked. But the crisis also led to intense debates and competing plans to rebuild the town – was it to be a garrison, a mercantile port, or a fortified city? Using original historical documents, this talk will provide a glimpse of Mumbai in the early 1800s, and discuss the importance of historical urban research.
This Master class will be the occasion for those of you who miss Sciences Po classes to re-live the experience and for all the people interested in studying at Sciences Po to give it a try ! Feel free to spread the word.
