ABOUT THE FILM

Before it became a cult classic, Freaks shocked audiences so deeply that it was banned in several countries and effectively disappeared from circulation for decades. Following its release, the film was withdrawn and heavily censored, and it remained banned in the UK for over 30 years. In the United States, many theatres refused to screen it, and it was effectively suppressed after a public backlash.

Directed by Tod Browning (Dracula), Freaks tells the story of a travelling circus and features performers with real physical differences rather than actors in makeup. Nearly a century later, it remains one of the most controversial, compassionate, and radical films ever made.
