Parallels between French and Indian film directors
by Jeffrey Goldberg
Auteur theory is the idea that one individual is responsible for the entire creative vision and style of a film. This theory came to the forefront of film theory in the late 1950’s when Francois Truffaut and his colleagues at the Cahiers du Cinema, starting writing about authorial intent in filmmaking. They attributed this leading role to the director of the film.
Jeffrey Goldberg will analyze and compare the work of two directors and how their choices shaped key-elements of the filmmaking process. This month, he will focus on Jacques Audiard, french director and Dibakar Banerjee, Indian Director.
