TCF (Test de connaissance du Français) is a French Language proficiency test. It is a standardized and calibrated test that ranks candidates on one of the six levels on a scale defined by the Council of Europe (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe). It does not require specific study. TCF score results are reliable measurements for determining proficiency. Developed by the CIEP, a public institution of the French Ministry of Education, the test ensures strict methodology validated by a scientific committee composed of the best French and European specialists. CIEP is already in charge of the DELF and DALF, the only official diplomas of French as a foreign language.

It is a multiple choice test with 80 items that cover reading comprehension, command of grammatical structures and listening comprehension. It also includes optional tests for written and spoken expression

As a fair and objective evaluation of your French proficiency, the TCF will enable you to:

  • Obtain some sort of linguistic photography of your level in French at the time the test is taken
  • Demonstrate to your employer (present or potential) what you can currently accomplish in French
  • Validate your knowledge in a simple, fast and reliable way
  • Measure your progress in French

TCF, along with a specific compulsory written expression test (1½ hours), is the official pre-entrance test (DAP) for foreign students who wish to enter the first cycle of higher education in France.
Test marking

All papers are scored in France (CIEP), the answers being read by an optical scanner. Compulsory tests answers are read by an optical scanner. Expression tests are marked twice by a team of trained and accredited markers.
