The French Information Resource Centre of the Alliance Française de Bombay has a mission: "Bringing France closer home ". It serves as the landmark of Information on different aspects of France. We wish to attract and to establish a larger number of users.
Established in a quite cosy space, our resource centre is a network of information resources on subjects such as literature, theatre, poetry, social sciences, tourism, arts, architecture, life style in France. It is also provided with numerous French textbooks and dictionaries aimed at the students and easy French books for the beginners. Several French newspapers and magazines are also available.
The dominant part of the collection is in French but we intend to increase the proportion of books in English. The French Information Resource centre proposes more than 7300 books and around 1300 audio and video supports. All the major works of French literature from the origins to nowadays and poetry are available along with comics and non-fiction. The resource centre is also provided with numerous French textbooks and dictionaries meant for the students and easy French books for the beginners. Among the audio material one can find the classic standards along with Chanson française and contemporary music of various styles. The DVD section of the resource centre is endowed with classic French films recent creations and documentaries. Exhibitions, cultural events, academic counseling and lectures are organized in the library which thus becomes a place of permanent cultural and educational exchanges.
Books are arranged alphabetically according to different fields. Documents in English are coded with a yellow sticker on their spine.
The French virtual Library completes the role of the resource centre by allowing the consultation of a wide range of periodicals, relay of TV5 (the International French-speaking TV-channel), an interactive website, consultation of some important French websites and electronic journals. The French virtual library is a resource pool which allows members of the French Information Resource Centre (FICR) to benefit from the extensive collection and variety of services available both at the FIRC and Alliance Française across the country. If you are a member of the FIRC or any other Alliance Française, you may borrow from any of the collections available in the Union catalogue of French Virtual Library. You just have to contact your local Alliance Library or the FIRC who will take care of your query. Please note that shipping fees will be charged to the borrower. Users can also browse the OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) installed in our premises, for searching and finding a document available here at the Alliance Française de Bombay or at any other library that forms part of our network.
Hi-tech audio-visual equipment to consult music CDs and films at the centre is available and those who wish to consult our CD ROMs may do so at no extra cost. The Internet access centre boasts of state of the art equipment and a new sleek look. This is the place to come to for any information on France that could be found on Internet.
