Meeting Point – Outside Phoenix Market city Gate no. 2

Tucked away in the bylanes of Kurla’s commercial face, that reflects little about the lives on the streets around it, is a neighbourhood soaked in ‘stories and histories’. Through our walk Knowing Kurla we intend to interact with the pocket and get a sense of the community that continues to hold on to its ways despite being bypassed in the global narrative of the city.

We walk through the lanes of Naupada, Culbavour, and Kurla Christian Village that meet at the Holy Cross Church, occupying a central presence in this “East Indian” neighbourhood with a strong Koli and Portuguese influence. We get a taste of this syncretic culture in the bottle masalas sold in its markets, culinary traditions, homes, railway people, erstwhile mill stories and just through human presence and activity around the area. The walk
intends to negotiate with this non-glass and steel Kurla, take it out of the memory cabinet and put it back on the city map. This walk will be led by Shriti K. Tyagi. It will be in English and is being organised in partnership with Piramal Museum of Art.

Free and open to everyone | Limited seats | Registration compulsory and strictly on a first-come first-serve basis via communication.mumbai@afindia.org
